The Ecologist reports..

The Ecologist have promoted our training network with a guide to video activism.

Perhaps the most important weapon in the video activist’s armory is the desire to help and the passion to educate in the first place.

‘Passion will drive you to seek out the story and to find the people who need to tell it,’ says filmmaker Helen Iles of Undercurrents. ‘Passion will keep you going when the camera fogs up in the rain, when the computer you are editing with crashes and when you need some extra balls for that tricky interview/doorstep/action. Passion can be driven by enthusiasm, a sense of injustice or by anger. It is best driven by love. So if you love people, love the planet, love your community, love the environment, love yourself, then this is your best resource.’

Citizen Journalists a match for Police in court.

Riot officers began advancing on the Bishopsgate crowd with batons and shields, violently striking the crowd back. Those officers soon discovered that citizen journalism provided equal accountability to any court. Activists with video cameras had scaled a nearby building and filmed as non-violent protesters in the kettle were pushed, kicked, punched in the face and struck with shields.

The nine delegates on the eco-film course were all of very different backgrounds. There were a couple of students, two people from the various organisations based at the centre, a communication manager (I think) from a large and ethically-aware UK company, a lady who had been to war zones, me, and a few more people. Film-making experience ranged from absolute novice/beginner to Dangerous Final Cut Bodger With A Ludicrous Digital Camera.

BBC report on Citizen Journalism

Picture
BBC states:
The protesters believe the mainstream press does not give the whole picture, so they have started making their own independent news reports. Demonstrators equipped with camcorders have become a regular feature at anti-globalisation actions the world over.

Using relatively cheap consumer technology, like digital video cameras, laptop computer editing software and internet web-streaming, a media counter-culture is emerging, which reflects the values of the anti-globalisation direct action movement.
